Stochastic resonance in a nonlinear model of a rotating, stratified shear flow, with a simple stochastic inertia-gravity wave parameterization

چکیده
We report on a numerical study of the impact of short, fast inertia-gravity waves on the large-scale, slowlyevolving flow with which they co-exist. A nonlinear quasigeostrophic numerical model of a stratified shear flow is used to simulate, at reasonably high resolution, the evolution of a large-scale mode which grows due to baroclinic instability and equilibrates at finite amplitude. Ageostrophic inertiagravity modes are filtered out of the model by construction, but their effects on the balanced flow are incorporated using a simple stochastic parameterization of the potential vorticity anomalies which they induce. The model simulates a rotating, two-layer annulus laboratory experiment, in which we recently observed systematic inertia-gravity wave generation by an evolving, large-scale flow. We find that the impact of the small-amplitude stochastic contribution to the potential vorticity tendency, on the model balanced flow, is generally small, as expected. In certain circumstances, however, the parameterized fast waves can exert a dominant influence. In a flow which is baroclinicallyunstable to a range of zonal wavenumbers, and in which there is a close match between the growth rates of the multiple modes, the stochastic waves can strongly affect wavenumber selection. This is illustrated by a flow in which the parameterized fast modes dramatically re-partition the probabilitydensity function for equilibrated large-scale zonal wavenumber. In a second case study, the stochastic perturbations are shown to force spontaneous wavenumber transitions in the large-scale flow, which do not occur in their absence. These phenomena are due to a stochastic resonance effect. They add to the evidence that deterministic parameterizations in general circulation models, of subgrid-scale processes such as gravity wave drag, cannot always adequately capture the full details of the nonlinear interaction. Unbalanced instabilities of rapidly rotating stratified shear flows
The linear stability of a rotating, stratified, inviscid horizontal plane Couette flow in a channel is studied in the limit of strong rotation and stratification. Two dimensionless parameters characterize the flow: the Rossby number ǫ, defined as the ratio of the shear to the Coriolis frequency and assumed small, and the ratio s of the Coriolis frequency to the buoyancy frequency, assumed to sa...
متن کاملAgeostrophic, anticyclonic instability of a geostrophic, barotropic boundary current
After having previously demonstrated the occurrence of ageostrophic, anticyclonic instability (AAI) for several other steady flows, in this paper we further test the hypothesis that rotating, stably stratified, shear flows are generally subject to AAI at finite Rossby (Ro) and Froude (Fr) numbers by calculating the inviscid, incompressible normal modes of a geostrophic, barotropic boundary curr...
متن کاملCombination Resonance of Nonlinear Rotating Balanced Shafts Subjected to Periodic Axial Load
Dynamic behavior of a circular shaft with geometrical nonlinearity and constant spin, subjected to periodic axial load is investigated. The case of parametric combination resonance is studied. Extension of shaft center line is the source of nonlinearity. The shaft has gyroscopic effect and rotary inertia but shear deformation is neglected. The equations of motion are derived by extended Hamilto...

A reduced dynamical model is derived which describes the interaction of weak inertia-gravity waves with nonlinear vortical motion in the context of rotating shallow-water flow. The formal scaling assumptions are (i) that there is a separation in timescales between the vortical motion and the inertia-gravity waves, and (ii) that the divergence is weak compared to the vorticity. The model is Hami...
